The Company

One of the largest companies in the world is a leading Scandinavian multinational energy company with a robust presence in the global oil and gas sector. It is also making significant strides in renewable energy, particularly offshore wind. The company operates in over 30 countries, with substantial projects on the Nordic Continental Shelf and in the U.S., Brazil, and other vital regions. Their strategy includes a strong push towards sustainability, with ambitious goals such as achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This is supported by substantial investments in renewable energy sources, including some of the world’s largest offshore wind farms.

Additionally, the company is pioneering technologies like carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce its operations' carbon footprint, ensuring it remains competitive in a future where environmental considerations are paramount. The energy giant continues leveraging its oil and gas expertise, contributing to global energy security while gradually transitioning to greener alternatives. The company’s balanced approach, combining innovation in both traditional and renewable energy sectors, positions it as a critical player in the global shift towards a more sustainable energy future.

The Challenge

The company was confronted with a series of complex challenges in managing its vast and diverse database estate. As the company expanded its operations across multiple platforms, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), on-premises environments, and Azure IaaS, the costs and complexities associated with database management began to escalate. High operational costs were a significant concern, driven by the need to manage various Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) applications and host external tables across these environments.

One of the critical challenges was the inability to maintain centralized visibility and control over license management, compute resources, and software images across multiple subscriptions. This lack of central oversight made enforcing license compliance and meeting audit requirements difficult, posing a significant risk as the company’s Oracle End User License Agreement (EULA) was nearing renewal. The company also struggled with managing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) across its diverse environments, further complicating its operational management.

Moreover, the company faced high Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO), which led to frequent downtime and disruptions in business operations. The inability to achieve quick recovery and minimal data loss during incidents was a critical issue, impacting the company’s ability to maintain continuous business operations. This combination of high costs, operational inefficiencies, and business risks underscored the need for a comprehensive solution that could address these challenges holistically.

The Solution

To overcome these challenges, the Fortune 100 company partnered with Tessell to implement Tessell’s Oracle PaaS on Azure, a solution specifically designed to optimize and streamline database management across complex, multi-cloud environments. Tessell’s solution provided them with a centralized control system that brought much-needed visibility and oversight to its entire database estate.

One of the critical components of the solution was Tessell’s ability to offer centralized control over licenses, compute resources, and software images across all cloud subscriptions, whether in OCI, on-premises, or Azure IaaS. This centralization allowed the company to effectively enforce license management policies, ensuring compliance with audit requirements and mitigating non-compliance risk as their Oracle EULA renewal approached.

Tessell’s ability to co-host multiple database services was crucial in optimizing infrastructure resource utilization. By consolidating multiple databases onto a single server, Tessell allowed the company to reduce the required licenses and optimize compute resources significantly. This consolidation lowered operational costs and simplified the management of the company’s database estate, making it easier to scale operations and manage workloads more efficiently.

In addition to resource optimization, Tessell’s solution included automated High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) capabilities. These features ensured that the critical business applications remained available, even during incidents, by providing rapid recovery options and minimizing data loss. The automated setup for provisioning, patching, and HA/DR management further reduced the administrative burden on the IT teams, allowing them to focus on more strategic initiatives.

The Results

Tessell’s Oracle PaaS on Azure delivered remarkable results for the energy giant, significantly enhancing the management and efficiency of its extensive database estate. Managing over 700 databases across multiple environments, they achieved approximately 50% compute savings by leveraging Tessell’s database service co-hosting feature, which allowed the consolidation of multiple databases onto fewer servers. This consolidation reduced hardware requirements and optimized the use of licenses, resulting in a 40% reduction in licensing costs.

Tessell’s solution also led to a 65% improvement in operational efficiency. The automated provisioning, patching, and HA/DR setup streamlined day-to-day operations, reducing manual intervention and freeing IT resources to focus on strategic initiatives. The seamless integration of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) applications further enhanced operational flexibility, allowing the company to efficiently manage its diverse application portfolio.

Tessell’s centralized management capabilities gave the company complete visibility and control across its entire database estate, spanning on-premises environments, OCI, and Azure. This central oversight was crucial as the company transitioned critical workloads from on-premises and OCI to Azure, ensuring consistent management practices and compliance across all platforms. With Tessell, the energy giant now benefits from a unified, scalable, and future-proof platform that supports its ongoing digital transformation efforts, positioning the company for sustained success in the competitive energy sector.
